Guilford County Schools

Guilford County Schools

Guilford County Schools is the third largest school district in North Carolina with 71,000 students at 120 schools.  In addition to our excellent traditional schools, GCS has been very innovative in implementing new programs and schools.  The public school system offers a wide-variety of education experiences.

Our traditional, neighborhood schools offer programs for advanced learners and those with special needs.  Many local elementary schools offer licensed after-school care (called ACES) until 6:00 p.m. for only $46/week.

Our Superintendent, Maurice "Mo" Green, joined GCS in 2008 and has brought even more ideas to our schools.  He is committed to continuing our school districts successes.

Our school enrollment has grown steadily over the years and our voters have consistently voted in favor of school bonds so that we can build new facilities.  Just this last year, we added several new schools.  Our new Guilford Northern Middle School and Guilford Northern High School, which opened in 2008, were built "green" for added energy efficiency.

In addition to our tradition schools, we have schools that specifically serve our advanced learners, offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma program and foreign language immersion.  Other schools focus on science, technology and the performing and visual arts.  It is also one of the few places in the country where you can get a free Montessori education for your student.  More information about these programs can be found at Guilford County Magnet Schools.

Some of our high schools have formed partnerships with local colleges to offer high school students the opportunity to earn college credit before they graduate.  U.S. News & World Report just ranked our The Early College at Guilford seventeenth in the nation for 2009, after collecting data on 21,000 public high schools.

In addition, Guilford County Schools College Tech Prep Program offers another way for students to earn college credit while still in high school.  Students in the program pick an area of concentration from one of the 18 courses of study offered.  After graduating, students are eligible for a full-tuition, two-year scholarship to GuilfordTechnology Community College.

Guilford County Schools has just introduced Parent Assistant to enhance communications between parents and teachers.  This online system provides up-to-date information on attendance, assignments and grades.

No matter what your student's needs, chances are Guilford County Schools can help.  Click here to learn more about Guilford County Schools or Guilford County Magnet Schools.
