American Hebrew Academy
American Hebrew Academy (AHA) is pronounced around Greensboro as “Ah-ha”. It is the only school of its kind in the United States. The one-hundred acre campus was opened in 2001. AHA is a boarding school for 9-12 grade students. The current enrollment is 163 students from 28 different states and 11 foreign countries. Although it is a boarding school, approximately 20% of their students do not reside at the school.
In addition to rigorous classes focusing on academics and humanities, students expand their knowledge of Jewish heritage and religion. Each junior student spends 10 weeks in Israel to learn even more.
AHA is across the street from Temple Emmanuel in northwest Greensboro. According to the Jewish Education News, Fall 2008, the campus is not only beautiful but very environmentally-sound. Five hundred feet beneath the running track, which is made of recycled rubber, is the world’s largest closed loop geothermal heating and cooling system. The system initially cost $3 million and has over 750 wells. It is expected to pay for itself with energy savings in the next four years.
